Transport Minister shares vision for future of SA’s railways

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy recently shared her comprehensive vision for the future of Southern Africa's railways at the Southern African Railways Association (SARA) Conference. Emphasising the strategic importance of railways in the region's socioeconomic growth, she highlighted several key areas for development. These include modernising aging infrastructure, securing sustainable funding, and fostering regional collaboration to create an integrated rail network.

Creecy also stressed the need for the rail industry to adopt new technologies and environmentally sustainable practices. She pointed out that railways could play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change, aligning with global environmental goals.

The minister acknowledged the current challenges faced by the rail sector, including the need for significant investment in infrastructure and the importance of developing skilled personnel. She called for a collective effort from both public and private sectors to rejuvenate the railway system, making it more efficient, reliable, and capable of supporting economic activities across the region.

Creecy concluded by reiterating the critical role that railways will play in driving economic development and regional integration. She urged stakeholders to prioritise the revitalisation of this sector to ensure it can meet the future needs of Southern Africa.
